Bed bugs

OVERVIEW

Bed bugs are blood-eating insects. They require blood to breed and blood meals to survive; but unlike mosquitoes, they can’t fly to get to their food. … This has given rise to the belief that bed bugs are drawn to filthy places; but filth and clutter are not the cause of bed bugs.

Biology & Behavior

Bed bugs are a type of insect that feed on human blood, usually at night. Their bites can result in a number of health impacts including skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms. Bed bug bites may lead to skin changes ranging from invisible to small areas of redness to prominent blisters.

Signs

  1. Blood stains on your sheets or pillowcases.
  2. Dark or rusty spots of bedbug excrement on sheets and mattresses, bed clothes, and walls.
  3. Bedbug fecal spots, egg shells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide.
  4. An offensive, musty odor from the bugs’ scent glands.

Damage

Bed bugs do not cause physical damage to your home. There are some pests, such as termites and rodents, which can cause physical damage to your home. Termites eat away at the wood elements of your home which eventually leads to structural damage.
